The Ekiti State Police Command has debunked reports that Omoyele Sowore, presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), was kidnapped in Ado-Ekiti
This was disclosed In a statement issued on Friday by SP Abutu Sunday, Police Public Relations Officer, the Command said its attention was drawn to messages circulating on social media alleging that Sowore was kidnapped by armed thugs with his whereabouts unknown.
“The Command wishes to categorically clarify that Mr. Sowore was not kidnapped,” the statement said.
According to the police, preliminary information indicates that Sowore had an altercation with some individuals at a restaurant around Dalimore area, Ado-Ekiti, following which the police were alerted.
“Upon receiving the report, Police operatives swiftly mobilised to the scene and successfully rescued him. He, however, sustained a minor injury and is currently receiving medical attention at the Police Hospital, Ado-Ekiti,” SP Abutu said.
CP Falade Adegoroye Michael, Commissioner of Police, Ekiti State Command, has ordered a discreet investigation into the incident to establish the full circumstances, identify all individuals involved and ensure anyone found culpable is brought to justice.
The command urged members of the public to disregard the alleged kidnap narrative and refrain from circulating unverified information capable of creating panic.
“The Command calls for calm and urges members of the public to disregard the misleading narrative of an alleged kidnapping and refrain from circulating unverified information capable of creating unnecessary panic and tension,” the statement said.
The police reiterated its commitment to the protection of lives and property irrespective of political affiliation, status, or background.
The clarification comes hours after the AAC, in a statement by Rex Elanu, National Publicity Secretary, who claimed Sowore was attacked at Tawakal-Tu restaurant by gunmen described as APC thugs and that his whereabouts were unknown.
