Granit Xhaka, Sunderland midfielder, has revealed that his desire to continue Sunderland’s project and play European football influenced his decision to reject a move to Chelsea during the summer transfer window.
Chelsea reportedly wanted to reunite the Switzerland international with manager Xabi Alonso, who previously worked with Xhaka at Bayer Leverkusen.
The pair helped Leverkusen secure the Bundesliga title before Xhaka left the German club for Sunderland.
Despite Chelsea’s interest, the 33-year-old midfielder opted to remain at Sunderland and continue working towards the club’s ambitions.
Xhaka said his decision was driven by the belief that his work at Sunderland was not yet complete.
Speaking on The Sports Agents podcast, Xhaka said he told Sunderland’s owner that he wanted to remain at the club because he believed there was still more to achieve.
“I want to enjoy European football with this football club,” Xhaka said.
“When I spoke with the owner of Sunderland, I told him from the beginning, I don’t have the feeling that this project is done yet, and this is my motivation, that is why they put me here, and that’s why I’m still here to get to the next step.”
Xhaka also admitted that he was honoured by Chelsea’s interest and the possibility of working with Alonso again.
He added that, at nearly 34, being wanted by a club of Chelsea’s stature was a significant recognition.
“Of course, it’s a big privilege for me that Xabi Alonso, whom I worked with, wanted me again. It’s a big privilege that a football club like Chelsea wants a player, nearly 34 years old,” he added.
