The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has celebrated the historic gold medal victory of its athlete, Corporal Ezekiel Nathaniel, in the men’s 400 metres hurdles at the ongoing Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, describing the achievement as a testament to discipline, resilience and the Force’s commitment to sports development.
Nathaniel produced a commanding performance on Friday night, crossing the finish line in 48.47 seconds to clinch the Commonwealth title and secure Nigeria’s first-place finish in the event. The victory marks a significant improvement from his sixth-place finish at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.
Reacting to the feat, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, commended the police athlete for bringing honour to both Nigeria and the Nigeria Police Force through his outstanding performance on the international stage.
The IGP said Nathaniel’s success exemplifies excellence, dedication and professionalism, adding that it should serve as a source of inspiration to police personnel across the country.
According to the Force leadership, the gold medal reflects the impact of sustained institutional support for sports development within the Nigeria Police Force and aligns with the Inspector-General’s strategic agenda on personnel welfare, capacity building and sports development.
The Force noted that it remains committed to identifying, nurturing and supporting talented athletes within its ranks, while maintaining sports as a key component of tactical fitness, institutional morale and positive youth engagement.
The Nigeria Police Force reaffirmed that investment in sporting excellence remains an integral part of its broader efforts to promote personnel welfare and showcase the capabilities of its officers beyond conventional policing duties.
