By Press Release

The Depot Nigerian Army, Osogbo, has ordered a full investigation into allegations that some of its personnel harassed and assaulted students in Osogbo, assuring that anyone found culpable will face the full weight of military law.

The assurance was contained in a statement issued on Tuesday by the Army Public Relations Officer, Depot Nigerian Army, Osogbo, Major Yahaya Ibrahim, in response to concerns raised by the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Southwest Zone D.

The Commandant of the Depot said the Nigerian Army exists to protect all citizens, particularly young people, stressing that any conduct inconsistent with its mandate is unacceptable.

According to the statement, no student or law-abiding citizen should be subjected to harassment, intimidation or assault by security personnel charged with protecting lives and property.

“In line with military regulations and the values of the Nigerian Army, the Commandant has ordered an investigation to ascertain the facts of the incident and bring perpetrators to justice,” the statement read.

The Army also appealed to the Southwest Coordinator of NANS, Comrade Adeyemo Josiah Kayode, to provide all available evidence and witness statements to facilitate a comprehensive investigation into the allegations.

The Depot maintained that the reported actions do not reflect the standard of training, discipline and character expected of recruits undergoing training at the institution.

It assured members of the public that any personnel found guilty after the investigation would be sanctioned in accordance with military law.

The Commandant further expressed readiness to meet with the leadership of NANS at the earliest opportunity to discuss the matter and agree on the way forward.

The statement reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s commitment to maintaining professionalism, discipline and accountability while ensuring that its personnel uphold the highest standards in the discharge of their duties.
