The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing mass literacy and bridging the digital divide as it marked the 2025 International Literacy Day in Abuja with the theme: “Promoting Literacy in the Digital Era.”

At a ministerial briefing, Honourable Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Said Ahmed, stressed that literacy is the foundation of development. Under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, government is ensuring inclusive and quality education for all Nigerians.

She disclosed that the Ministry has adopted a data-driven approach to identify out-of-school children and adults for enrollment into inclusive literacy programmes. She emphasized government’s commitment to controlling its education data system for accuracy, transparency, and effectiveness. Technology is being deployed to extend literacy to cities, villages, IDP camps, and remote areas, with partners and stakeholders urged to support this vision.

Acting NMEC Executive Secretary, Dr. John Edeh Onimisi, noted that literacy must remain a right. He revealed digital enrollment targets have been surpassed, with over 27,000 learners already enrolled. NMEC’s use of radio, TV, and mobile apps is expanding learning nationwide and preparing Nigerians for the digital economy.

Delivering UNESCO’s goodwill message, Mr. Oladeji Adeyemi affirmed that literacy now means equipping citizens with digital skills and critical thinking, reinforcing it as a human right and driver of peace, inclusion, and sustainable development.
