The Nigeria Police Force has announced the death of 17 police officers following a terrorist attack on the Nigerian Army Special Forces School in Buni Yadi, Gujba Local Government Area of Yobe State.

The officers were among security personnel undergoing specialised operational training at the military institution when terrorists launched a coordinated attack on the facility in the early hours of May 8, 2026.

According to a statement issued on Friday by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon Placid, the attackers stormed the school from multiple directions at about 1:15 a.m., leading to a fierce exchange of gunfire.

The police said several personnel of the Nigerian Army also lost their lives while courageously repelling the assault.

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, described the slain officers as gallant and patriotic personnel who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the nation.

He said the officers demonstrated exceptional dedication to national security through their participation in advanced counter-terrorism and tactical training programmes.

“Their sacrifice and commitment to protecting the country will never be forgotten,” the IGP stated while extending condolences to the families of the deceased officers.

As part of efforts to show solidarity with the victims and surviving officers, the Commissioner of Police, Yobe State Command, CP Usman Kanfani Jibrin, visited the training institution on behalf of the Inspector-General of Police.

During the visit, he commiserated with the Commandant of the School, Brigadier General A.C. Enuagu, officers of the Nigerian Army, and police personnel undergoing training at the facility.

The CP also encouraged the surviving officers to remain resolute and complete the training programme in honour of their fallen colleagues.

The Nigeria Police Force assured Nigerians that it would continue to work closely with the Armed Forces and other security agencies to track down and bring the perpetrators of the attack to justice.

The Force further paid tribute to the fallen officers, noting that their courage, sacrifice and service to the nation would remain permanently honoured.
