The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has withdrawn a controversial publication on sexual harassment, saying the material does not reflect the institution’s values or official position following widespread public criticism.
Adejoke R. Alaga-Ibraheem, Head of the Communication Unit, disclosed this in a statement issued on behalf of the university management.
According to the statement, the publication, produced by the university’s Student Affairs Division, sparked public concern after it circulated on social media.
The management said the publication had been withdrawn because its content was inconsistent with the university’s standards.
“The publication was originally produced by the University’s Student Affairs Division. However, it has been withdrawn, as its content does not reflect the values, position, or standards of the University of Lagos,” the statement read.
UNILAG reiterated its zero-tolerance policy on rape and sexual harassment, stressing that it neither condones sexual harassment nor supports victim-blaming or victim-shaming.
The institution described attempts to place responsibility on victims of sexual harassment as unacceptable and contrary to its core values.
It also noted that sexual harassment is a serious form of misconduct that has no place within the university community, adding that it is not gender-specific and can affect anyone.
The management urged students who experience or witness incidents of sexual harassment to make use of the university’s official confidential reporting channels to facilitate prompt investigation and access appropriate support.
Reaffirming its commitment to a safe learning environment, the university said it would continue to promote a respectful, equitable and inclusive campus where members of the community can learn, work and thrive.
