Labour Party Fixes May 23 for Presidential Primary Ahead of 2027 Polls

The Labour Party Nigeria has announced May 23, 2026, as the date for its presidential primary ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Wednesday in Abuja by Ken Asogwa, Senior Special Adviser (Media) to the party’s Interim National Chairman.

According to Asogwa, the date forms part of the timetable approved at a statutory National Executive Council (NEC) meeting monitored by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

He added that, in compliance with the Electoral Act and INEC guidelines, the party also fixed April 15 for the submission of its membership register to the electoral body.

The statement further indicated that primaries for governorship, Senate, House of Representatives and House of Assembly positions will be held on May 15, while the party’s national convention is scheduled for April 11.

Asogwa noted that NEC ratified the conduct of ward, local government and state congresses slated for March 26, March 28 and March 31, respectively.

The council, he said, reviewed recent developments within the party, including what it described as the “unfortunate invasion” of its national secretariat by hoodlums allegedly sponsored by disruptive elements.

He also disclosed that the party’s Board of Trustees, acting on the recommendations of its Peace, Reconciliation and Disciplinary Committee chaired by Salisu Mohammed, approved the suspension of some members over alleged indiscipline, anti-party activities and involvement in the disruption at the secretariat.

On party administration, NEC endorsed the expansion of the membership register through a hybrid system combining digital registration and manual enrolment, particularly in rural communities, to enhance transparency and participation.

The council further resolved that existing vacancies within party structures be filled through interim appointments to ensure continuity pending the conduct of substantive congresses.

It also urged members to utilise internal dispute resolution mechanisms to address grievances and promote unity within the party.

Meanwhile, NEC welcomed a recent Federal High Court judgment affirming the leadership of Nenadi Usman as Interim National Chairman, passing a vote of confidence in her leadership, the Interim National Working Committee, the Board of Trustees, and key stakeholders including Alex Otti.

Asogwa commended INEC for its prompt compliance with the court’s pronouncement.
