The Labour Party (LP) has announced that its presidential ticket for the 2027 general elections has been zoned to the southern region of the country.

The party’s National Chairperson, Nenadi Usman, disclosed this on Tuesday in Abuja, stating that the decision had already been finalised within the party.
“We have taken a firm decision that we will not field any aspirant from northern Nigeria. The position has been zoned to southern Nigeria,” she said.
Usman added that any attempt by aspirants from the northern region to contest for the ticket would not be accepted by the party.
However, she declined to name any potential candidate, emphasising that the party would uphold internal democratic processes in selecting its flagbearer.
“As for who emerges, I cannot say at this stage because it would undermine the democratic process. Whoever the party members choose during the primaries will be the candidate,” she said.
She stressed that the party would not lobby individuals to run on its platform, noting that aspirants must emerge through established procedures.
On internal party matters, Usman revealed that a court case challenging the dissolution of the party’s national caretaker committee had been dismissed for lack of merit.
“To the glory of God, the case was thrown out because it lacked merit,” she said, adding that the ruling affirmed the party’s position.
The LP chairperson also hinted that the party may review the dates for its upcoming congresses due to a surge in membership, warning that sticking to the current schedule could disenfranchise new entrants.
Addressing security concerns, Usman said the party had petitioned the Nigeria Police Force over an attack on its office, expressing confidence that those responsible would be brought to justice.
She urged members to utilise the party’s digital registration platform, noting that manual registration should be reserved for those in areas with limited access to mobile technology.
