LP NEC Dissolves Usman Caretaker Committee, Reaffirms Abure Leadership

The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Labour Party Nigeria has dissolved the caretaker committee led by Nenadi Usman, citing alleged damage to the party, and reaffirmed its confidence in the National Working Committee (NWC) headed by Julius Abure.

The decision was announced in a statement issued on Tuesday in Abuja by the Secretary of the NEC Forum, Abdulrahim Chindo, following a virtual NEC meeting held on March 17, 2026.

According to the statement, the NEC—comprising elected state chairmen and secretaries—reviewed the activities of the caretaker committee and concluded that it had caused “incalculable damage” to the party since its inception.

“NEC in session reviewed the activities of the caretaker committee and consequently dissolved the Nenadi Usman Caretaker Committee,” the statement read.

The council also reaffirmed its support for the NWC led by Abure, noting that his leadership was validated at the party’s National Convention held on March 27, 2024, and subsequently reaffirmed at a NEC meeting on November 28, 2025, which was monitored by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

The NEC further directed Abure and the party’s National Secretary, Umar Ibrahim, to pursue an appeal at the Court of Appeal seeking to set aside a judgment delivered by Justice Peter Lifu on January 21, 2026.

It added that upon a favourable ruling, the party leadership should notify INEC to enable the conduct of primaries ahead of the 2027 general election in line with the electoral timetable.

The NEC also nullified all notices previously issued to INEC by the dissolved caretaker committee.

The development marks a fresh twist in the ongoing leadership crisis within the Labour Party, as factions continue to jostle for control of the party structure ahead of the next general elections.
