NAFDAC DG Commends FCCPC Leadership as Agencies Renew Consumer Protection MoU

Professor Mojisola Adeyeye, Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, has praised the leadership of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, describing its Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Tunji Bello, as responsive and committed to consumer protection.

Adeyeye spoke on Wednesday during the signing of a renewed Memorandum of Understanding between NAFDAC and the FCCPC at the commission’s headquarters.

She said her recent engagements with the FCCPC leadership demonstrated the urgency and seriousness required in protecting consumers, noting that Bello responded promptly on two occasions when complaints were brought to his attention, leading to corrective actions by the affected businesses.

“That is the way it is supposed to be,” she said, stressing that Nigerian consumers deserve the same level of protection enjoyed in other parts of the world.

The NAFDAC boss said the renewed agreement would deepen collaboration between both agencies in ensuring the safety, quality, and efficacy of regulated products.

Although NAFDAC’s mandate centres on products, she noted that consumer welfare remains the ultimate priority.

“It is people that use those products, and that is where the consumer comes in,” she said, adding that consumer complaints are essential for effective regulation.

Adeyeye also commended Bello’s willingness to collaborate, emphasizing that partnerships should extend beyond signed agreements to practical implementation.

Earlier, Bello said the renewed MoU would strengthen coordination in areas where consumer protection and product safety responsibilities overlap.

He explained that while the FCCPC protects consumers against unfair, deceptive, and exploitative practices, NAFDAC regulates the safety and quality of food, drugs, cosmetics, medical devices, chemicals, and other regulated products.

According to him, the agreement would enhance information sharing, speed up complaint resolution, support joint investigations, and improve technical collaboration between the agencies.

“For consumers, the benefits are clear. There will be more straightforward pathways for lodging complaints, faster resolution of issues, and stronger enforcement where standards are not met,” Bello said.

He added that effective regulation boosts market confidence and promotes fair competition but stressed that the success of the partnership would depend on implementation.

“The real task lies in implementation. The systems established here must be used actively, reviewed regularly and strengthened where necessary,” he stated.

Bello reaffirmed the FCCPC’s commitment to working with NAFDAC and other institutions to protect consumers and ensure fair, transparent, and efficient markets across Nigeria.
