LASG Reaffirms Commitment to Press Freedom, Democratic Accountability on World Press Freedom Day

By Our Reporter

The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting press freedom and strengthening democratic accountability as journalists across the globe marked World Press Freedom Day 2026.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, in a message delivered by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, described a free press as one of the strongest pillars of democracy.

He noted that the government would continue to support initiatives that promote press freedom and enhance accountability, stressing the importance of the media in giving voice to the voiceless, holding leaders accountable, and serving as a bridge between government and the people.

Reflecting on the 2026 theme, “Shaping a Future at Peace: Promoting Press Freedom for Human Rights, Development and Security,” the governor said the occasion provides an opportunity to assess progress and renew commitment to the ideals of press freedom.

According to him, the evolving information landscape places greater responsibility on the media, particularly in ensuring objective, balanced and professional reporting, especially as governments at various levels implement reforms.

Sanwo-Olu emphasised that the media must remain committed to fairness and national interest while critically examining government policies to ensure accountability.

He further reiterated the state government’s commitment to transparency, openness and constructive engagement with the media, noting that a well-informed society is essential for peace, security and inclusive development.

The governor, however, acknowledged the challenges facing the media, including misinformation, disinformation, economic pressures and safety concerns for journalists, warning that these pose risks to national stability.

He called for stronger collaboration among government, media practitioners and civil society to safeguard the integrity of the information space, especially as the country approaches another electoral cycle.

Sanwo-Olu also stressed the need for sustained investment in media literacy, support for ethical journalism and the creation of an enabling environment for the press to operate without interference.

He assured that the Lagos State Government would continue to protect journalists and promote initiatives that strengthen democratic accountability.
