A’Ibom Pays N82bn to Settle Retirees’ Gratuities

The Akwa Ibom State Government says it has paid over N82 billion out of the N111 billion inherited gratuities and other emoluments owed to retired civil servants since 2012.

Governor Umo Eno disclosed this in his Easter broadcast on Sunday, April 5, 2026, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to clearing all outstanding obligations before the end of his first tenure.

“To date, we have paid over N82 billion out of the N111 billion we inherited as gratuities and other emoluments of our retirees since 2012, and remain on track to liquidate the backlog, hopefully before the end of our first term in office. This was a campaign promise we made, and I’m happy to report that we are fulfilling that promise,” Eno said.

The governor also highlighted progress under his administration’s ARISE Agenda, noting that since assuming office in 2023, the government has embarked on the construction of over 1,300 kilometres of roads across the state, including inherited and newly initiated projects.

“At our last Executive Council meeting, we approved an additional 167 kilometres of roads across the state. Some of the roads currently ongoing are scheduled to be commissioned during the celebrations marking our third year in office,” he added.

Eno stated that development projects have spread across all local government areas, including road construction, model primary healthcare centres, schools, feeder roads, and general hospitals.

“Today, we make bold to state emphatically that there is no local government area in this state that we have not touched,” he said.

While acknowledging existing challenges, the governor expressed optimism, drawing inspiration from the Easter message.

“Just as the Risen Christ brought hope, redemption and salvation, we will continue to work to improve the welfare and well-being of our people,” he said.
