Plateau Killings: Delta Evacuates 34 Students from UNIJOS

The Delta State Government has evacuated 34 of its indigenes studying at the University of Jos following recent deadly attacks in Plateau State, including the killing of residents in Angwan Rukuba.

The violence in Angwan Rukuba, where several persons were reportedly killed during the religious observance, triggered fresh tensions and was followed by a series of reprisal attacks in parts of Jos and surrounding communities. The escalating insecurity forced the university management to shut down the institution temporarily to protect students and staff.

Receiving the students, Sunday Onoriode, the State Director of Protocol,  said the evacuation became necessary due to the closure of the institution amid the worsening security situation.

He expressed relief that the students returned safely, attributing the development to swift government intervention and coordination.

“We believe that with God, peace will be restored. When the time comes for you to return to school, you will go back and complete your studies successfully,” he said.

Onoriode reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to the welfare of Delta students across the country, urging them to remain law-abiding and focused on their academic pursuits.

Also speaking, a student representative and Vice President of the National Association of Delta State Students (NADESSTU), University of Jos chapter, Newton Miracle, commended the state government and other stakeholders for facilitating the evacuation, noting that the intervention came at a critical time for affected students.
