Nigerians Want Services Without Paying Taxes, Says Wike

Barrister Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, has expressed concern over the low level of tax compliance in Nigeria, noting a disconnect between citizens’ expectations and their willingness to contribute to government revenue.

Speaking during a live interview on TVC News, Wike said many Nigerians demand quality infrastructure and public services but are reluctant to pay taxes needed to fund such developments.

“Collecting taxes is not easy. Nigerians want everything for free—they want good roads and electricity, but they don’t want to pay taxes,” he said.

The minister explained that the Federal Capital Territory relies partly on allocations from the Federal Government, which he said is often insufficient to meet its financial obligations.

According to him, the FCT receives about one per cent of the Federal Government’s allocation, adding that such revenue cannot sustain the demands of the territory.

“If the Federal Government gets one trillion naira, we receive about one per cent, which is roughly ten billion naira. Meanwhile, our monthly salary obligations alone are between 12 and 13 billion naira. So, we must find ways to augment revenue,” he stated.

Wike also addressed criticisms of his administration, saying he remains focused on delivering results despite public backlash.

“There is hardly any politician who has not been criticised, but what matters is staying focused on the job,” he said.

On accountability, the minister assured that funds generated from taxes are closely monitored and utilised for development projects, adding that he is prepared to account for government spending when necessary.
