FIFA has raised concerns over alleged government interference in the affairs of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), warning that the development could have consequences for Nigerian football if the federation’s independence is compromised.
The world football governing body, in a letter dated September 1, 2026, asked Nigerian football authorities to clarify reports surrounding the reported resignation of NFF President Ibrahim Gusau.
The letter, signed by FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafström, said FIFA was particularly concerned by reports that Gusau resigned following an alleged directive from the Presidency.
FIFA requested written confirmation that the resignation was voluntary and not the result of pressure from government officials or other external actors.
The organisation also demanded an official explanation from the Federal Government on the circumstances surrounding Gusau’s reported resignation.
FIFA referenced Articles 14 and 19 of its Statutes, which require member associations to conduct their affairs independently and without undue interference from third parties, including government authorities.
The football body further sought assurances that the NFF would continue to operate in line with its own statutes and FIFA regulations.
The latest development has raised the possibility of disciplinary action against Nigeria if FIFA determines that government authorities interfered in the administration of the NFF in violation of its rules.
