The Abuja Metropolitan Lions Club (AMLC) has extended its commitment to promoting literacy and access to education with a back-to-school project held at two public secondary schools in Abuja.

The initiative, themed “Empowering Minds, Equipping Futures: Literacy and Learning for All,” was organised in commemoration of World Literacy Day and took place on Wednesday, September 23, at Government Secondary School, Gwarimpa Life Camp, and Model Girls Junior Secondary School (MGJSS), ACO Estate, Lugbe.

The project followed an online awareness campaign conducted by the Club on September 11 as part of efforts to raise awareness about the importance of literacy and education.

As part of the initiative, AMLC paid school fees for 10 out-of-school and indigent students, helping to remove financial barriers that could prevent them from returning to the classroom.

The Club also donated 600 customised 60-leaf exercise books, with 300 distributed at each school, as well as 100 customised school bags, with 50 presented to students at each school.

The learning materials were presented to some of the schools’ best-performing students. According to the organisers, beneficiaries were selected by the respective school managements in collaboration with the Club, based on criteria including academic performance, discipline, punctuality, neatness and commitment to school activities.

The selection, the Club said, was designed not only to support students with learning materials but also to encourage positive values and motivate other pupils to strive for excellence.

The programme featured sensitisation sessions on the importance of education, followed by the formal presentation and distribution of the school bags, exercise books and other educational support.

The initiative recorded more than 100 direct beneficiaries, while more than 200 students and members of the school communities were reached indirectly through the sensitisation activities.

School principals and staff at both institutions welcomed the initiative, describing the support as a meaningful contribution towards encouraging students to remain committed to their education.

Through the project, the Abuja Metropolitan Lions Club reaffirmed its focus on supporting education, promoting literacy and helping young people access the resources needed to pursue their academic aspirations.
