Billions Wasted: The untapped economic potentials of Nyanya’s Patience Jonathan Youth Centre

By Samuel Torlumun

For years, the Patience Goodluck Jonathan Youth Centre in Nyanya, Abuja, stood as a symbol of opportunity, community development, and youth empowerment. Strategically located to serve residents of Nyanya, Orozo, Karshi, Karu, Kurudu, and adjoining communities in Nasarawa State, the sprawling facility was envisioned as a vibrant hub for social, political, religious, and economic activities.

Today, however, the once-promising multi-million naira facility bears the scars of neglect — a reflection of the many abandoned public projects scattered across Nigeria. Dilapidated structures, incomplete maintenance works, and years of inactivity turned what was meant to be a thriving community asset into a moribund public property.

Yet, amid the ruins lies what many residents and stakeholders describe as a hidden goldmine capable of generating billions of naira annually for the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) if properly revived.

*A Centre Built for Economic and Social Impact*

The Patience Goodluck Jonathan Youth Centre was conceived not merely as an event venue, but as a strategic developmental project aimed at creating employment opportunities for Nigerians while providing a modern event and recreational facility for rapidly growing satellite communities around Abuja.

The centre was designed to accommodate conferences, weddings, political meetings, campaign rallies, church programmes, Islamic conferences, camping activities, cultural festivals, and several other large-scale social engagements.

Its location in Nyanya — one of Abuja’s busiest suburban corridors — positioned it to become a major alternative to expensive event facilities located in the city centre.

Residents say the facility, if fully restored and modernized, could significantly reduce the need for people in neighboring communities to travel long distances into central Abuja to host social or corporate events.

Beyond convenience, analysts believe the centre possesses enormous economic potential capable of transforming the local economy through tourism, hospitality, commerce, and job creation.

*Renewed Hope for Abandoned Infrastructure*

Under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, there is growing optimism that abandoned public infrastructure across the country can be restored to productivity.

That optimism has been strengthened by the developmental drive of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Barrister Nyesom Wike, whose administration has embarked on aggressive rehabilitation and completion of neglected public projects within Abuja.

The Minister has earned widespread recognition for restoring moribund infrastructure and repositioning public assets for revenue generation. One of the most notable examples is the rehabilitation of the International Conference Centre, Abuja, now renamed the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre.

Stakeholders now believe the Patience Goodluck Jonathan Youth Centre could become another major success story if the current renovation efforts are sustained and completed on schedule.

*Residents See Multi-Billion Naira Revenue Potential*

Speaking on the state of the facility, a resident, Ibrahim Audu, recalled the early years of the youth centre when the premises were vibrant and constantly filled with activities.

According to him, successive administrations failed to properly maintain the facility, leading to years of deterioration and abandonment.

“This place used to be very active in those days,” he said. “People came here for programmes, meetings, and different social activities. It is painful that such a massive investment was neglected for so long.”

Audu expressed confidence that a comprehensive renovation and modernization of the centre could generate over five billion naira annually for the FCTA through event bookings, commercial activities, and tourism-related services.

He noted that the revival of the centre would also stimulate economic activities across Nyanya and neighboring communities by attracting businesses, vendors, transport operators, and hospitality services.

According to him, the project could equally provide employment opportunities for facility managers, maintenance personnel, security operatives, event planners, and other service providers.

“The economic benefits are enormous if the government fully revives this place,” he added.

*Calls for More Development in Nyanya Axis*

While commending the infrastructural transformation currently taking place across Abuja under Barrister Nyesom Wike, Audu described the FCT Minister as “Mr. Projects,” noting that the capital city has witnessed rapid development within a short period.

He appealed to the Minister to extend similar developmental attention to satellite communities such as Nyanya by ensuring the timely completion of the youth centre renovation project.

Public affairs analyst Samuel Kavaanger also echoed similar sentiments, urging the FCT Administration not to abandon the project midway.

“I believe in the Honourable Minister of the Federal Capital Territory as a man who keeps to his words,” Kavaanger said. “He does not begin projects he cannot complete. Now that the contract has been awarded, we expect the project to be completed so that residents can fully benefit from the developmental strides taking place across Abuja.”

*Renovation Work Gains Momentum*

Findings indicate that the FCTA under Barrister Nyesom Wike awarded the renovation contract for the facility to MIC Property Turnkey Project Company Limited.

During a recent visit to the centre, ongoing construction activities were observed across several sections of the facility. Some buildings have already undergone significant facelift works, including the installation of modern roofing structures and rehabilitation of key sections of the complex.

Although substantial work remains to be completed, residents described the pace of construction as encouraging and commendable.

A security guard at the facility, who spoke in Hausa, disclosed that previous delays experienced by the project were linked to inadequate release of funds.

Efforts to obtain official clarification from the FCTA regarding funding releases to the contractor were reportedly unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.

*A Sleeping Giant Awaiting Revival*

For many residents within Nyanya and surrounding communities, the Patience Goodluck Jonathan Youth Centre represents more than just an abandoned structure — it symbolizes untapped economic potential waiting to be unlocked.

With Abuja’s growing population and increasing demand for affordable event facilities outside the city centre, many believe the revitalized youth centre could emerge as one of the most commercially viable public facilities within the satellite towns of the Federal Capital Territory.

As reconstruction work progresses, residents and stakeholders alike remain hopeful that the facility will once again become a thriving centre for youth empowerment, social engagement, economic activities, and community development.

If successfully completed and efficiently managed, the once-forgotten youth centre may soon transform from a symbol of neglect into a powerful driver of revenue generation and grassroots economic growth for the FCT.
