Delta Police Deny Death in Custody, Warn Against Spread of Misinformation

By Press Release

The Delta State Police Command has debunked reports alleging that a suspect died in police custody at Ekpan Police Station, describing the claim as false and misleading.

In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, the command dismissed a publication by one Israel Joe, a self-acclaimed activist, which alleged that an unnamed suspect died while in custody.

The police maintained that no such incident occurred in Ekpan or any part of the state, stressing that the allegation was an attempt to undermine ongoing efforts to combat crime.

According to the command, the operation referenced in the report was a coordinated raid on criminal hideouts conducted on March 25 and 26, 2026, under the leadership of Olumuyiwa Adejobi, Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations.

The operation led to the arrest of over 270 suspects across Ughelli and Warri, including suspected drug traffickers and wanted cultists, with large quantities of illicit drugs recovered.

Police said all suspects were properly screened, with those not implicated released, while others remain in custody in good condition. It emphasised that no casualties were recorded during the exercise.

The command described the circulation of the report as reckless, warning that the spread of false information could mislead the public and erode confidence in law enforcement.

While acknowledging the role of civic engagement, the police cautioned individuals against using activism or blogging as a cover to disseminate falsehoods, noting that offenders would be investigated and prosecuted.

The Commissioner of Police reaffirmed the command’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property, urging residents to rely on official channels for accurate information.

The police also called on the public to disregard the report, reiterating its dedication to professionalism, accountability, and maintaining peace and security across Delta State.
