Experts have urged young Nigerians to embrace volunteering as a pathway to acquiring the skills needed for personal and professional growth.

The advice was given at the 10th Young Leaders Entrepreneurship Conference held at the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) in Abuja.
Speaking at the event, the Minister of Youth Development, Comrade Ayodele Olawande, highlighted the vast potential of the digital economy to empower young Nigerians to create value, drive innovation, and contribute meaningfully to national development.
He noted that despite the growing opportunities in the digital space, many start-ups continue to face challenges, including limited access to mentorship, funding, and business support services.
According to the minister, Nigerian youths possess the talent, creativity, and resilience required to make significant contributions to the country’s economic development.
He urged aspiring entrepreneurs to start small, remain focused, and build sustainable businesses capable of creating long-term impact.
Also speaking at the conference, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, represented by Hon. Bamidele Salam, said Nigeria has adequate laws and policies to support entrepreneurship and innovation.
He cited the Nigerian Startup Act as a key example, noting that many of the intended beneficiaries have yet to fully take advantage of the opportunities provided by the legislation.
Earlier, the convener of the conference, Dr. Tosin Adesile, said the annual event was designed to build the capacity of young people, provide them with access to relevant information, and create networking opportunities.
He added that the initiative goes beyond training by maintaining contact with participants and supporting their continued growth and development in their chosen business ventures.
Other speakers at the conference included Dr. Tope Fasua, Special Adviser to the President on Economic Affairs; Dr. Shaibu Husseini, Director-General of the National Film and Video Censors Board; and Bunmi Ayodele, Head of Youth Banking and Bancassurance at Wema Bank.
