Academic activities at Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University, Makurdi, have been disrupted following the commencement of an indefinite strike by the institution’s chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, over alleged underpayment of salaries and allowances.
The union’s chairperson, Terseer Abari, announced the industrial action in a statement on Wednesday, saying it was approved at a congress held on August 12, 2026.
Abari urged the relevant authorities to pay all outstanding entitlements owed members to facilitate the resumption of academic activities.
According to the union, the university has paid only two of the four components contained in the 2025 agreement between the Federal Government and ASUU.
The statement said members had received the Consolidated Academic Staff Salaries and Earned Academic Allowance, while payments for the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance and Professorial Allowance remained incomplete.
The union said the two outstanding components were paid only for January and February 2026, while just 39 per cent of the CATA for March 2026 had been paid.
It described the situation as an underpayment of salaries owed members.
The union said the strike would continue until the outstanding payments were addressed, urging the appropriate authorities to resolve the matter to allow normal academic activities to resume.
