Sowore Protests Against Unconstitutional Arrest of FIJ Journalist

By Yusuf Olukokun

Omoyele Sowore, 2023 Presidential aspirant, has come out publicly to protest against the illegal arrest of Daniel Ojukwu, a journalist of Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ) on Thursday, May 9 2024, in Abuja.

Following the arrest of Daniel after 9 days, journalists in Nigeria have strongly condemned his detainment, demanding the journalist should be released.

Sowore, has therefore, come out to organize a protest and also publicly said that the Inspector General of Police IGP, Kayode Egbetokun, has no right to use the Police to oppress anybody because the police is not his personal property.

Sowore exemplified further at the protest scene, “We must remind the IGP, that his time here is just a few more months, he is going to leave in September 2024. I heard he is trying to extend his tenure, let him forget, his tenure will never be extended.”

He also maintained that Daniel Ojukwu has committed no crime; infact, it is the constitution that gives rights to police that also gives Daniel the rights to be a journalist. He stated that Daniel’s freedom is not negotiable and police must free him.

“The Nigerian Union of Journalist also must continue to stand up for what is right, I am ashamed that journalists are not here in their large numbers to come and put an end to what is now known as the ‘Cybercrime Acts of 2015’, which is now being used to protect criminals that supposed to be in prison for corruption,” Sowore said assertively.
