Hadi Tahan Nazif, spokesman for the Guardian Council in Iran has said that Mohammad Mokhber, the first vice president of Iran, will assume the duties of the late President Ibrahim Raisi.
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iranian Supreme Leader announced the appointment of Mokhber in a condolence message he shared for Raisi’s death in the crash on Monday.
Khamenei had said in a post on X before the tragic news was confirmed that “the nation doesn’t need to be worried or anxious as the administration of the country will not be disrupted at all.”
According to the Iranian Constitution, the first vice president takes over temporarily in the event of the death or major illness of the incumbent president for a period of 50 days.
Iran’s three branches of government held an extraordinary meeting on Monday, with Mohammad Mokhber, First Vice President representing the executive branch following the death of President Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash, Iranian state TV said, according to Reuters news agency.
“We will follow the path of President Raisi in fulfilling assigned duties without any interruption,” Mokhber was quoted as saying.
