Independence Day: Melaye Faults Tinubu’s Speech Over Insecurity

By Jelili Gbadamosi

Dino Melaye ,Former Kogi State Senator has criticised President Bola Tinubu’s Independence Day address, saying the speech did not sufficiently address Nigeria’s security challenges.

Melaye claimed that the President’s broadcast on Thursday gave limited attention to insecurity despite what he described as the worsening situation across the country.

In a post on his official X handle on Friday, the former federal lawmaker alleged that more than 1,000 Nigerians were being held by terrorists in different forests.

He also claimed that insecurity had prevented farmers from accessing their farmlands and alleged that innocent Nigerians continued to lose their lives to attacks.

According to Melaye, the security situation should have received greater emphasis in the President’s Independence Day message.

He said, “President Tinubu omitted the most critical issue of insecurity in his Independence Day broadcast, mentioned insecurity only once, when over 1,000 Nigerians are in the hands of their abductors as we speak.

“Farmers cannot go to farms. Innocent souls being killed on a daily basis. It is a pity. It is a shame.”

It’s was gathered that insecurity, including kidnapping, banditry and other violent crimes, has remained a major concern in several parts of Nigeria under the Tinubu administration.

On Independence Day, an attack by bandits was also reported in Kaduna State, where one person was killed and several others were reportedly abducted.
