The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) informed residents, traders, motorists and the general public that there will be a controlled demolition of the structurally distressed Great Nigeria Insurance House located on Lagos Island, starting Thursday, 15th October 2026.

A statement signed by Dr. Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu,
Permanent Secretary, LASEMA, said the exercise has been approved after thorough structural assessment by relevant agencies, which confirmed that the building poses a significant risk to public safety. In order to prevent any untoward incident and to safeguard lives and property, the demolition will be carried out in a controlled and professional manner using global best practices.
For the duration of the exercise, the immediate surroundings of the building will be cordoned off, and access will be restricted. There will also be temporary traffic diversions in adjoining streets to ensure the free flow of movement and the safety of all road users. The exercise may come with mild noise and dust, and the Agency craves the understanding of those within the neighbourhood.
It therefore appeals to all residents, business owners, and motorists who live or operate within the area to cooperate fully with the emergency responders and traffic management officials.
The general public are advised to avoid the affected area as much as possible, make use of alternative routes where necessary, and strictly adhere to safety instructions and diversion signs.
LASEMA, in collaboration with other relevant state agencies, will be on the ground to coordinate safety arrangements and ensure that the entire operation is carried out smoothly and without harm to anyone.
The Lagos State Government sincerely appreciates the cooperation, patience, and understanding of the good people of Lagos as it continues to work together to make the city safer for everyone.
