The Lagos State Police Command has detained an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Omotayo Olajide, following a shooting incident in the Nosamu area of Ajegunle, which claimed the life of a little girl and left another injured.

The incident occurred on Thursday, November 5, 2026, between 9:30 p.m. and 10:00 p.m., when the police officer allegedly discharged his firearm during an operation to quell a violent clash between two rival groups.

The Command, in a statement issued on Saturday by its Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, said preliminary findings indicated that the officer was deployed following a distress call over a clash between the Nosamu Boys and Alayabiagba Boys, reportedly involving a dispute over toll collection.

According to the statement, members of the rival groups were allegedly armed with cutlasses and other dangerous weapons when police operatives arrived at the scene.

During the operation, Olajide discharged his firearm, and the bullet struck two girls, identified as Omole Taiwo and another child.

Both victims were rushed to Ajeromi General Hospital, while one was subsequently transferred to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja, where she later died. The other girl is receiving medical attention and is said to be in stable condition.

Expressing sadness over the incident, the police said the officer had been disarmed and detained, while the investigation had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a thorough and impartial investigation.

The Command said the investigation would establish the circumstances surrounding the shooting and determine appropriate legal and disciplinary actions.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Tijani Fatai, personally visited the bereaved family to express his condolences and assure them that justice would be served.

He warned that no police personnel found culpable would be shielded, adding that the investigation would be conducted with the highest standards of professionalism, transparency and accountability.

The Command also urged members of the public with relevant information that could assist the investigation to report to the nearest police station or its Public Relations Department.

It reiterated its condolences to the family of the deceased and assured the public of its commitment to protecting lives and ensuring accountability.
