The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria has granted accreditation to the College of Health Sciences of the Federal University of Technology Akure, authorising the institution to continue its Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme.

The approval was conveyed during an accreditation visit to the university on April 22, 2026, by an MDCN delegation led by its Deputy Registrar, Nnameka Nwakanma. The Council also approved an admission quota of 100 medical students for the programme.

Speaking during an engagement with the university management led by Vice Chancellor Adenike Oladiji, Dr. Nwakanma expressed satisfaction with the institution’s level of preparedness, describing the exercise as productive. He emphasised the importance of aligning the College’s operations with MDCN standards and reiterated the Council’s commitment to ensuring that medical education in Nigeria meets global best practices.

As part of the accreditation process, the MDCN team conducted a comprehensive inspection of facilities across departments in Basic Medical Sciences, Basic Clinical Sciences, and Clinical Sciences. The delegation assessed key departments including Human Anatomy, Physiology, Medical Microbiology, Community Medicine, Anatomic Pathology, Chemical Pathology, Haematology and Blood Transfusion, Microbial Pathology, and Pharmacology and Therapeutics.

The team also evaluated critical facilities such as the Physiology Laboratory, Animal House, Histology and Histopathology Laboratories, and the Medical Museum. In addition, the delegation visited the Comprehensive Health Centre in Ijare to assess the Rural Community Health Practice Centre, as well as the FUTA Teaching Hospital, where they were received by the Chief Medical Director, Olusegun Ojo.

During the inspection, the Provost of the College of Health Sciences, Biodun Olagbuji, and the Deputy Provost, Victor Ukwenya, presented an overview of the College’s structure, governance, and operational framework. They highlighted the integration of preclinical and clinical training as a key design feature aimed at producing competent medical professionals.

Describing the accreditation as a landmark achievement, Professor Ojo said it paves the way for the institution to conduct its first professional examination. “This is a monumental development that gives our students the confidence to move forward,” he said.

In her remarks, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Oladiji, expressed appreciation to the MDCN team for the successful exercise. She noted that the university had invested significant effort in meeting the required standards and reaffirmed its commitment to excellence in medical education.

She also acknowledged the contributions of the Deji of Akure Kingdom, Aladetoyinbo Ogunlade Aladelusi, and other stakeholders for supporting the development of the medical programme through the donation of modern teaching laboratories and student accommodation.

The MDCN accreditation follows an earlier approval by the National Universities Commission, which granted full accreditation to the university’s Medicine and Surgery programme in a letter dated April 7, 2026, after a successful resource verification exercise.
