The Jigawa State Government has announced measures to reduce canoe accidents on the state’s waterways following two separate incidents that claimed 14 lives.
The Jigawa State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA, said it would intensify safety measures for canoe operators and passengers, particularly during periods of strong winds and unfavourable weather.
The agency’s Executive Secretary, Hannafi Yakubu, disclosed this while reacting to the recent canoe mishap at Dudduru Lake near Kwadige village in Dutse Local Government Area.
DAILY POST reports that four girls were among eight people aboard a canoe that capsized at the lake, resulting in their deaths.
The incident occurred after another canoe accident at Malamawar Yandutse village in Ringim Local Government Area claimed 10 lives.
SEMA attributed the accidents to the use of old boats and overloading, warning operators against practices capable of putting passengers at risk.
Yakubu said the agency would not tolerate violations of established safety measures, stressing that canoe users must take precautions to protect lives and property.
“We will not tolerate this. We will ensure that all boat users strictly observe safety measures to prevent loss of lives and property,” he said.
The state government said it was particularly concerned by the increasing number of canoe-related accidents and had begun taking steps to address the situation.
The Commissioner for Special Duties and Humanitarian Affairs, Danladi Sankara, said the government was working towards providing canoe owners with safer boats and life jackets.
He said the measures were intended to reduce the risks faced by residents who depend on waterways for transportation.
SEMA also sympathised with the families of those who lost their lives in the recent accidents, urging canoe operators and passengers to prioritise safety.
The agency further advised residents to avoid travelling on waterways whenever weather conditions become dangerous, especially during periods of strong winds.
