Media, Communication Researchers to meet in Lagos for AMCRON conference

By Press Release

Media and communication scholars from within and outside Nigeria are expected to convene at the University of Lagos, Akoka, for the 5th International Academic Conference and Annual General Meeting of the Association of Media and Communication Researchers of Nigeria (AMCRON).

The conference, scheduled for December 3–4, 2025, will focus on the theme: “Issues in Artificial Intelligence: The Media and Democracy.”

It is expected to draw participants from the academia, media industry, public and private sectors, policymaking circles, and social research communities.

According to a statement, Prof. Eserinune McCarty Mojaye, AMCRON President, urged stakeholders to attend, noting that the conference would deepen conversations on how artificial intelligence is reshaping media practice and democratic participation.

He said the opening ceremony would hold on Wednesday, December 3, at 10am.

South West Zonal Coordinator of the conference, Dr. Kehinde Oyesomi, called for broad participation, stressing the importance of interrogating both the opportunities and challenges that AI presents to the media and democratic governance.

According to the organisers, the rapid evolution of AI has transformed news production, content distribution, audience engagement and access to information, while also raising concerns over misinformation, deepfakes, data privacy, ethics and algorithmic bias.

The conference aims to provide a platform for experts to examine these issues, share research findings and develop actionable insights to strengthen media accountability and democratic resilience.

The event will feature discussions across thematic areas including AI and public policy, digital surveillance and privacy, political communication, media literacy, data ethics, electoral processes, content creation and the impact of generative AI on truth and public discourse.

AMCRON said the gathering will foster dialogue and help chart responsible pathways for harnessing AI in ways that uphold democratic values and protect the integrity of public communication.
