By Ikugbadi Oluwasegun

Nigeria is leading diplomatic efforts to restore cohesion between ECOWAS and the Alliance of Sahel States.

A statement by Oluwafemi Adeniyi, Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs says, the Minister of State, Sola Enikanolaiye, is currently in Dakar, Senegal, leading Nigeria’s delegation to the first round of discussions between ECOWAS and the AES.

The high-level meeting marks a significant step to preserve regional integration.

The meeting also aims to align strategic positions of ECOWAS member States and facilitate targeted talks at ministerial and technical levels to address shared regional issues.

It is expected that the engagement will produce concurrence on the draft General Framework Agreement between both blocs, ahead of the ECOWAS Summit scheduled for Abuja in December 2026.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs says Nigeria remains committed to peace, security and ensuring that the exit of AES member States does not negatively impact age-long cultural and geographical ties between West African nations.
