Nigeria Summons South Africa’s Acting High Commissioner Over Anti-Foreigner Protests

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs Nigeria has summoned the Acting High Commissioner of South Africa over recent protests and reported attacks targeting foreign nationals, including Nigerians.

In a press release issued in Abuja, the ministry said it had invited the envoy for a meeting scheduled for Monday, May 4, 2026, at its headquarters to address growing concerns over developments in South Africa.

According to the statement, the Nigerian government intends to formally convey its “profound concern” over incidents that could strain the long-standing cordial relations between both countries.

The ministry noted that discussions would focus on ongoing demonstrations by certain groups in South Africa, as well as documented cases of alleged mistreatment of Nigerian citizens and attacks on their businesses.

It added that the Federal Government is aware of increasing public concern among Nigerians regarding the safety and welfare of compatriots residing in South Africa.

While calling for calm, the government reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the rights and well-being of Nigerians abroad and ensuring that diplomatic steps are taken to address the situation.

The statement was signed by the ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, on Saturday.
