Presidency Denies Plan to Rename Nigeria, Scrap Sharia Law

The Presidency has dismissed as false and misleading a viral report claiming that President Bola Tinubu plans to amend the Constitution to rename Nigeria as the “United States of Nigeria” and abolish Sharia Law in the Northern region.

In a statement issued on Thursday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the Presidency described the report as fake news designed to create political tension and disaffection in the country ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to the statement, the report, which allegedly cited anonymous sources, is part of a plot by “desperate politicians” to destabilise the country and heat up the polity.

The Presidency urged Nigerians to disregard the report in its entirety, stressing that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has no intention of sponsoring any bill code-named “Project True Federation” to the National Assembly.

It also denied claims that such a bill would be introduced by December 15, shortly before the general elections.

The statement noted that constitutional amendments in Nigeria are serious legislative matters that require rigorous debate, scrutiny and approval processes involving both chambers of the National Assembly and at least 24 State Houses of Assembly.

“The process of amending the constitution is not at the President’s or the National Assembly’s whim,” the statement said.

The Presidency further stated that President Tinubu remains focused on implementing economic reforms and delivering tangible benefits to Nigerians rather than engaging in divisive political distractions.

It warned citizens to be cautious of fake and inflammatory reports, especially as political activities intensify ahead of the January 2027 general elections.
