WHO Warns of Surging Mpox Spread Across Africa & Beyond

By Ikugbadi Oluwasegun

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has issued a strong warning about the escalating transmission of mpox, with 17 African nations reporting active cases over the past six weeks.

WHO in a statement, said from September 14 to October 19, the agency documented 2,862 confirmed infections and 17 deaths.

Formerly known as monkeypox, the virus has now emerged for the first time in Malaysia, Namibia, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Spain, marking its expanding footprint outside Africa.

In its latest assessment, the WHO calls for intensified monitoring, broader vaccine distribution, and robust infection prevention measures to halt the virus’s entrenchment.

As mpox advances quietly yet persistently, international leaders face a critical juncture: effective containment demands a swift, unified response.
