Lagos seals four properties over illegal wastewater discharge

The Lagos State Wastewater Management Office has sealed four properties in Ikotun and Ajah for allegedly discharging untreated wastewater into public spaces.

The enforcement operation, carried out on Wednesday and Thursday, affected two residential buildings located at 13 Oritola Street and 1 Temitope Street, Pipeline, Ikotun.

Tokunbo Wahab, the state Commissioner for the Environment,  disclosed this in a post on X on Thursday, adding that a public toilet and a mechanic workshop along Badore Road in Ajah were also shut down.

According to Wahab, the action in Ikotun followed public complaints, repeated warnings, and confirmed findings from investigations, which showed that the property owners were deliberately channeling untreated wastewater onto the roads through pipes.

“The situation, which persisted despite warnings, revealed that the properties were intentionally releasing untreated wastewater into the environment, thereby constituting a public nuisance,” he said.

The Ajah premises were sealed over what authorities described as indiscriminate discharge of wastewater into public drains and the surrounding environment.

Wahab warned that the enforcement exercise would continue, stressing that individuals and organisations found violating environmental laws would face sanctions and possible prosecution.

He added that the Lagos State Government has reiterated the need for residents and property managers to strictly comply with proper wastewater management practices.
