Buhari writes Senate, seek confirmation of new CJN

President Muhammadu Buhari has asked the Senate to confirm Justice Olukayode Ariwoola as the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN).

His request was detailed in a letter read out by Ahmed Lawan,Senate President, at the commencement of plenary on Tuesday.

In the request sent for confirmation, he said, is in accordance with Section 231(1) of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria.

It would be recalled that President Buhari had appointed and sworn in Mr Ariwoola in acting capacity last month, it is mandatory that the appointment of the latter be confirmed by the Senate.

The new CJN’s appointment comes about a month after his predecessor, Muhammad Tanko, resigned.
