Dave Umahi, Minister of Works, has directed the immediate reopening of the Independence Bridge in Victoria Island, Lagos, to address severe traffic congestion caused by its closure.
The bridge was shut down on March 19, 2025, for emergency repairs, with completion initially set for May 26, 2025. However, after reassessing the situation, Umahi ordered an early reopening to improve vehicular movement.
The closure had resulted in heavy gridlock, disrupting commuters and businesses. Authorities expect reopening the bridge to relieve traffic pressure and enhance connectivity across the city.
