NASU, SSANU Declare Nationwide Strike Over Allowance Dispute

Operations across federal universities and inter-university centres are set for disruption as the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities have declared a nationwide strike beginning midnight on May 1, 2026.

In a letter dated April 30, 2026, and addressed to the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, the unions said the decision followed the Federal Government’s failure to conclude renegotiations and present a fresh offer on allowances. The letter was jointly signed by NASU General Secretary, Peters Adeyemi, and SSANU President, Mohammed Ibrahim.

The unions acknowledged the withdrawal of an earlier circular proposing a 30 per cent increase in the Consolidated Non-Teaching Tools Allowance but maintained that the action did not address the core issues in dispute.

“Despite this, the withdrawal did not resolve the fundamental concerns. The slow pace of the renegotiation process remains unacceptable,” the unions stated.

They further noted that no alternative proposal had been presented to replace the withdrawn offer, stressing that their demands had not been met within the agreed timeframe.

According to the JAC, the Federal Government failed to meet the April 30 deadline set by the unions to conclude negotiations, prompting the decision to embark on industrial action.

“As a result of the failure of Government to avert the strike by positively acceding to our demands, all members will commence a total and comprehensive strike action from 12:00 a.m. on May 1, 2026,” the statement read.

The unions warned that the strike would shut down non-academic services in federal universities nationwide, raising concerns over renewed disruptions in the country’s education sector.
