Alex Badeh, Director General of the Nigeria Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB), led investigators to Wadata, Benue State, for an on-the-spot safety assessment after a boat accident claimed 11 lives recently.
The team was received by Deputy Governor, Dr. Samuel Ode and later met Governor Hyacinth Alia, who commended NSIB’s swift response and urged a stronger Bureau presence for safety advocacy on the river Benue.
Capt. Badeh condoled with bereaved families. He said many waterway accidents are preventable through safety awareness, responsible operations, and better collaboration.
The investigators met boat operators and community leaders to gather first-hand accounts and insights into local safety practices and challenges.
The NSIB’s investigation is aimed at making future safety recommendations and strengthening safety culture on Nigeria’s Inland Waterways.
