IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu,Inspector-General of Police, has directed all officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force to immediately desist from engaging in unauthorised social media activities capable of undermining the integrity, professionalism and public image of the Force.

The directive comes amid growing concerns over the increasing trend of police personnel creating and sharing videos, conducting live broadcasts and engaging in other social media activities while in uniform or in situations that clearly identify them as members of the Nigeria Police Force without official approval.

According to the Inspector-General, while social media remains an important platform for communication, public engagement and information dissemination, its use by serving officers must strictly conform to existing laws, regulations and the Nigeria Police Force Social Media Policy.

IGP Disu emphasised that police personnel are prohibited from creating, publishing or sharing unauthorised content while dressed in police uniform or acting in any capacity that portrays them as representatives of the Force without proper authorisation.

He further warned officers against making public comments on official police matters, disclosing operational or sensitive information, or using their status as law enforcement officers for personal promotion, entertainment, financial gain or commercial purposes.

The police chief noted that such activities have the potential to compromise operational security, erode public confidence and damage the reputation of the Force.

He stressed that members of the Nigeria Police Force are expected to maintain the highest standards of discipline, professionalism and ethical conduct both on and off duty, including their activities in the digital space.

The directive forms part of ongoing efforts by the Force leadership to strengthen professionalism, protect institutional integrity and ensure responsible engagement with the public across all communication platforms.

IGP Disu warned that any officer found violating the provisions of the Force’s social media guidelines would face appropriate disciplinary measures in accordance with established regulations.

He urged commanders at all levels to ensure strict compliance with the directive and to sensitise officers under their command on the proper use of social media and the consequences of misconduct online.

The Inspector-General reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to professionalism, accountability and responsible public engagement while safeguarding the image and credibility of the institution.
