The Delta State Police Command has arrested a popular content creator, Ifeanyi Ogbonna, widely known as “Odogwu of Asaba,” over the alleged rape of a 20-year-old woman who later died after reportedly taking her own life.

The command said the arrest followed a petition alleging that the incident occurred on June 1, 2026, after the deceased travelled to Asaba at the invitation of the suspect.

According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, the suspect had allegedly invited the young woman to Asaba with a promise to train her in content creation, a programme he reportedly advertised on his social media platforms.

Police alleged that upon her arrival in Asaba, Ogbonna took the victim to a hotel, where he allegedly raped and physically assaulted her.

The victim was said to have returned home visibly traumatised and narrated the incident to her parents.

The command further disclosed that before her death, the deceased recorded a video in which she recounted her alleged ordeal and the emotional distress she suffered following the incident.

According to the police, the woman later ingested a toxic substance in an apparent suicide attempt and subsequently died despite efforts to save her life.

Following receipt of the petition, the Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, directed the Area Command in Effurun to immediately commence a comprehensive investigation into the allegations.

The directive led to the arrest of Ogbonna, who is currently in police custody.

Police said the suspect had made useful statements during preliminary interrogation, while further investigations were ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the case.

The Commissioner of Police assured the deceased’s family and members of the public that the matter would be thoroughly investigated and that no aspect of the allegations would be overlooked.

He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to conducting a professional investigation and ensuring that anyone found culpable is prosecuted in accordance with the law.

The police urged members of the public to remain calm and allow the investigation to run its course.
