Media and communication scholars, researchers, journalists, policymakers, political actors, and other stakeholders from Nigeria and across the globe will converge in Ibadan, Oyo State, for the 6th International Academic Conference and Annual General Meeting of the Association of Media and Communication Researchers of Nigeria (AMCRON).

The conference, themed “Beyond the Inverted Pyramid Formula: Democracy, the Media, the Politicians and the People in Nigeria’s General Elections,”will hold from Wednesday, November 25 to Thursday, November 26, 2026, at the Department of Mass Communication and Media Technology, Lead City University, Ibadan. The event will be held in a hybrid format, allowing both physical and virtual participation via Zoom.
According to a statement issued by the association, the conference will bring together renowned speakers from academia, industry, the public sector, and the private sector to examine the changing dynamics of political communication, election reporting, and democratic governance in Nigeria.
The President of AMCRON, Prof. Eserinune McCarty Mojaye, called on media professionals, academics, politicians, political parties, policymakers, social researchers, and other stakeholders to participate in the conference. He stressed the importance of interrogating the evolving role of the media in promoting democratic accountability and credible electoral processes.
Also speaking, the association’s Director of Networking and Publicity, Dr. Kehinde Oyesomi, said the conference would provide a timely opportunity to examine how strategic communication, digital media, and the political economy of media ownership continue to influence public trust and the integrity of electoral information.
He noted that the rapidly changing political communication environment has challenged the traditional inverted pyramid model of news reporting, making it imperative for scholars and practitioners to explore emerging realities in journalism and democratic engagement.
According to the organisers, the conference will provide a platform for critical discussions on the interaction between the media, politicians, electoral institutions, and citizens during Nigeria’s general elections. Participants will also examine issues such as media framing, digital propaganda, misinformation, fact-checking, and the growing influence of Artificial Intelligence on public opinion and national stability.
The organisers added that the conference aims to generate practical recommendations for promoting ethical communication, strengthening democratic institutions, protecting vulnerable groups, addressing online harassment, and enhancing responsible media practice.
The conference will feature paper presentations across several thematic areas, including media practice and election reporting; digital media, technology and the information ecosystem; democracy, governance and electoral accountability; citizen participation and democratic engagement; gender, digital violence and protection of vulnerable groups; political communication, peacebuilding and social responsibility; as well as strategic communication, propaganda, advertising and public relations.
