Finidi George, Rivers United technical adviser, says his side is prepared to face the challenge of continental football when they take on Ivorian club San Pedro in the CAF Champions League.
The Port Harcourt-based club will travel to the San Pedro Stadium on Saturday night for the first leg of their first preliminary round tie.
Rivers United reached the group stage of last season’s CAF Champions League, but Finidi believes the current squad must approach the new campaign as a fresh challenge, given the number of new players in the team.
The former Super Eagles winger said the experience gained from last season would be useful, although he acknowledged that the present squad is still developing.
“So, it’s a new team that we have now. We’re also looking forward to that experience. We don’t have three, four seasons experience of CAF Champions League,” Finidi said at a press conference.
“So, we’re new as well because there are a whole lot of new players in the team.”
Finidi’s remarks come as Rivers United begin their latest quest to progress deep into Africa’s premier club competition, with the Nigerian side hoping to secure a positive result away from home before the return leg.
The encounter will provide the new-look Rivers United squad with an early test of its ability to compete at continental level.
