President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced that members of Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, have received the cash rewards promised to them following their outstanding performance for the country.

Tinubu disclosed this in a statement posted on his official X handle on Thursday.

According to the President, each player received the naira equivalent of $100,000, while officials of the team received the equivalent of $50,000 each.

He said the cash payments completed the Federal Government’s reward package for the team, which also included national honours and the allocation of three-bedroom houses in Abuja.

Tinubu explained that the payment process took some time because the administration had to comply with relevant legal and administrative procedures before releasing the funds.

“For the first time, a Federal Government has fulfilled this scale of presidential sporting rewards in full within one year. We had to follow the processes required by law and ensure that every commitment was properly implemented,” he said.

The President also disclosed that the Federal Government was concluding the outstanding cash rewards promised to members of the Super Falcons.

He said the female footballers had already received documents relating to their house allocations and certificates for their National Honours.

Tinubu added that the commitments made to members of the Super Eagles, including houses and national honours, had also been fulfilled.

He said Nigerian athletes who achieve success for the country deserved tangible rewards beyond public recognition.

“Our athletes who bring honour to Nigeria deserve more than applause. They deserve a country that keeps its word,” the President stated.

Tinubu congratulated the athletes for their achievements and urged Nigerian sportsmen and women to continue making the country proud.

“Nigeria is proud of you,” he added.
