Benue Police Confirm Death of Fugitive Linked to EFCC Cybercrime Case

The Benue State Police Command has confirmed the death of a fugitive, identified as Atser Sesugh, who was linked to an alleged fraud and cybercrime case being investigated by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

According to the command, Sesugh was among three suspects arrested by operatives of the EFCC in Makurdi on April 28, 2026, over allegations bordering on fraud and cybercrime.

The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Udeme Edet, disclosed in a statement on Sunday that the suspects; James Onuh, Atser Sesugh, and Solomon Aondoakura Orhena who reportedly escaped from lawful custody at the EFCC facility in Makurdi on May 4, 2026.

The statement revealed that on May 23, 2026, at about 3 p.m., intelligence reports indicated that the fleeing suspects had been sighted at a hideout behind Mechanic Village in the Kanshio area of Makurdi.

“Upon arrival at the scene, operatives sighted a group of young men suspected to be cultists who opened fire on the EFCC operatives and escaped during an exchange of gunfire that followed,” the statement said.

The police explained that while retreating from the scene after the gun duel, the operatives discovered Sesugh lying in a pool of blood by the roadside.

He was immediately rushed to the Police Cottage Hospital in Makurdi, where he was confirmed dead by medical personnel.

The command added that the corpse had been deposited at the Benue State University Teaching Hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy.

The Commissioner of Police in the state has directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department to conduct a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Police authorities also stated that efforts were ongoing to apprehend the remaining fleeing suspects.

The command reassured residents of its commitment to upholding the rule of law and urged members of the public to report suspicious activities through its emergency lines.
