Alhaji Mohammed Idris, Minister of Information and National Orientation, has called on bloggers, online publishers and digital content creators to embrace ethical journalism, responsible storytelling and fact-based reporting in order to strengthen democracy and promote national development.
Speaking at the Niger State Bloggers, Online Publishers and Content Developers Forum held on Monday in Abuja, the minister said digital platforms have become powerful tools for innovation, civic engagement and public discourse, but stressed that they must be used responsibly.
According to him, a responsible media remains indispensable to the survival of democracy, urging content creators to balance press freedom with professionalism and accountability.
“There is no democracy that can thrive without a responsible media. You cannot carry freedom and abandon responsibility,” Idris said.
The minister reaffirmed the commitment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to protecting press freedom while encouraging ethical journalism and responsible communication.
He urged bloggers and digital influencers to verify information before publication, reject misinformation and disinformation, avoid sensationalism, and use their platforms to educate, inspire and promote national unity.
Idris also encouraged young Nigerians to view digital content creation not only as a source of livelihood but as a vital instrument for civic engagement and nation-building.
He noted that ethical communication plays a critical role in strengthening public trust, promoting social cohesion and deepening democratic governance.
Highlighting the Federal Government’s efforts to promote responsible digital engagement, the minister referenced the establishment of the International Media and Information Literacy Institute (IMILI), describing it as the world’s first UNESCO Category 2 Institute dedicated exclusively to Media and Information Literacy.
He said the institute represents a major milestone in advancing digital literacy, combating misinformation and promoting responsible online engagement in Nigeria and beyond.
The minister further encouraged aspiring bloggers, online publishers and digital entrepreneurs to continually improve their professional skills and uphold ethical standards that will enhance the credibility and sustainability of Nigeria’s digital media ecosystem.
