IGP Olatunji Disu, Inspector-General of Police (IGP), has charged senior officers of the Nigeria Police Force to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, due diligence and ethical conduct in the discharge of their responsibilities.
The charge was given on Monday during a strategic briefing with members of the Force Management Team, senior commanders and key stakeholders at the Goodluck Ebele Jonathan Peacekeeping Hall, Force Headquarters, Abuja.
Addressing the gathering, the IGP commended police operatives across the country for their courage and professionalism in combating banditry, kidnapping and other violent crimes.
He particularly praised officers involved in the recent rescue of abducted teachers and pupils in Oyo State, describing the operation as a remarkable demonstration of tactical excellence and intelligence-led policing.
On preparations for the forthcoming off-cycle governorship election in Osun State, Disu directed the Commissioner of Police in the state, as well as commissioners in neighbouring states, to strengthen border security and deploy critical operational assets ahead of the poll.
He said the measures were aimed at ensuring a peaceful, transparent and violence-free electoral process.
The IGP also warned officers against the unauthorized transfer of criminal cases and undue interference in ongoing investigations, describing such practices as unethical and capable of undermining justice and public confidence in the police.
According to him, adherence to due process and investigative integrity remains essential to effective policing and the administration of justice.
The strategic meeting also reviewed operational measures to tackle the growing threat of organised crime and the vandalism of critical national infrastructure across the country.
As part of efforts to strengthen transparency and improve public engagement, Disu announced plans for an executive workshop for all Commissioners of Police.
The workshop, he said, will focus on “Enhancing Strategic Communication, Media Relations, Thought Leadership, Emotional Intelligence, and Public Relations Excellence in the Nigeria Police Force.”
The Inspector-General noted that the initiative would equip police commanders with the communication and leadership skills required to build stronger relationships with the public and improve institutional accountability.
In his closing remarks, the IGP urged all personnel to remain committed to the Force’s constitutional mandate of protecting lives and property while intensifying efforts to combat crime nationwide.
He also expressed appreciation to Nigerians for their continued support, noting that timely and credible intelligence provided by members of the public has remained crucial to the success of police operations across the country.
