The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), under the leadership of Dr. Vincent Olatunji, National Commissioner, is driving a major shift in public sector accountability. In a decisive enforcement move backed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the commission has established that government heads face direct personal liability for any security breaches.
Babatunde Bamigboye, Head Legal Enforcement and Regulation, in a statement notes that under the framework, all public institutions must overhaul their security systems immediately. The commission requires every agency to designate a certified Data Protection Officer, register their credentials directly with the commission, and dedicate specific budget allocations to cyber security. Furthermore, agencies must submit their records to external compliance experts for mandatory audits to eliminate system vulnerabilities.
Recognizing the challenges of this institutional shift, NDPC also launched an innovative regulatory clinic to provide direct, hands-on technical guidance. The commissioner emphasized that tracking and safeguarding this resource is non-negotiable for securing the nation’s digital economy. Through these aggressive steps, the commission aims to build public trust and establish a secure foundation for the country’s technological future.
