The Federal Government has congratulated President Bassirou Diomaye Faye of the Republic of Senegal on his election as the new Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government.
In a statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Nigerian Government commended ECOWAS for this seamless transition, describing it as a demonstration of the bloc’s commitment to democratic principles, regional solidarity and collective progress.
The statement notes that President Faye’s assumption of office comes at a pivotal moment for West Africa as the region continues to address shared challenges and pursue deeper integration, peace, security, and economic integration.
According to the statement, as a founding member of ECOWAS, Nigeria reaffirmed its full support for President Faye’s chairmanship and expressed confidence that under his leadership, the sub-region will advance unity, stability and sustainable development.
The statement further congratulated Senegal on the appointment of General Birame Diop as the new president of the ECOWAS Commission and pledged to work closely with his new leadership team.
