Nigeria’s Opposition Movement Calls for Suspension of New Tax Law

The National Opposition Movement (NOM) has called for the immediate suspension of the implementation of President Tinubu’s new tax law, describing it as an “assault on the livelihood of ordinary Nigerians”.

The group, which comprises opposition politicians, labour leaders, and civil society organizations, argued that the tax law is not a reform but a weapon designed to exploit and impoverish Nigerians.
NOM’s spokesperson, Chille igbewua stated that the tax law is a recipe for disaster, as it will further burden Nigerians who are already struggling to make ends meet.

The group notes that the country’s economic indicators are dire, with poverty, homelessness, and starvation rampant, and the government’s focus on taxation is misplaced.
The opposition movement questioned the timing of the tax law, given the country’s economic challenges.

The removal of fuel subsidies, collapse of the naira, food inflation, and rising electricity tariffs have already pushed households and small businesses to the edge.
NOM argued that introducing an aggressive tax regime now is cruel and irrational.

The group also expressed concern over the lack of transparency and accountability in the government’s handling of the tax laws demanding that the government publish the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed with a French agency regarding the management of Nigeria’s tax regime.
