The Ogun State Police Command has debunked a viral social media report alleging that suspected kidnappers were apprehended in Kanuyi Community, Simawa, Ogun State, clarifying that the individuals involved were serving police officers who were mistakenly identified as criminals.

The Command, in a statement issued on Monday, expressed concern over the ordeal suffered by the officers, who were subjected to public suspicion after losing their way while returning from an official assignment.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, the Simawa Divisional Headquarters received information at about 11:00 a.m. on June 1, 2026, that two suspected criminals had been apprehended by residents of the community.
Police operatives were immediately deployed to the scene, where they rescued the individuals from an agitated crowd and took them into protective custody for identification and investigation.
Preliminary findings revealed that the two men were serving police officers attached to a Police Mobile Force Squadron in Lagos State. Investigations further showed that they had inadvertently missed their route while returning from an official duty post in Sagamu and were consequently mistaken for suspected kidnappers by members of the public.
The Command stated that the officers’ identities were confirmed through valid police identity cards, official deployment documents, uniforms, and other service materials. Their parent formation also authenticated their status as genuine members of the Nigeria Police Force carrying out lawful duties.
Police authorities disclosed that before officers arrived at the scene, the victims had been searched, photographed and video-recorded by some residents, resulting in the circulation of misleading content on social media platforms.
While the officers escaped physical assault, the Command noted that the incident exposed them to unnecessary public embarrassment and emotional distress despite their role in protecting lives and property.
The Police Command commended residents for their vigilance and willingness to support security efforts but cautioned against mob actions, hasty conclusions, and the dissemination of unverified information.
“The public should always allow security agencies to verify facts before circulating reports capable of endangering innocent persons,” the statement said.
The Command noted that the incident highlights the challenges and sacrifices security personnel face in the line of duty and underscores the need for stronger cooperation between the public and law enforcement agencies.
It further urged residents to rely on information from official sources and avoid sharing unconfirmed reports that could cause panic, damage reputations, or undermine confidence in security operations.
The Ogun State Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property, strengthening community policing, and promoting professionalism and accountability in its operations.
Residents were encouraged to continue reporting suspicious activities through the Command’s emergency channels while allowing law enforcement agencies to carry out necessary verification and investigations.
